Loredo, playa

Icono Español. Icon Spanish.

Icon English. Loredo beach Loredo is a Cantabrian locality, belonging to the municipality of Ribamontán al Mar and placed to the south of the Bay of Santander. Its beach, which receives the name of the locality, has a longuitud of 1200 meters and an average width of 60 meters. The tracing of the sandbank shows itself across the configuration that the bay has provided to the area, curving the beach in the contiguous part to Somo and extending it up to another end; where there appears the Santa Marina Island. This peculiar drawing gives origin to one of the zones with major presence of waves in Cantábria, known as La Curva. Several types different from waves exist with distinct exits and sizes.

The beach shelters the Derby of Loredo, the most ancient and important equine competition of the north of Spain. Celebrated between ends of July and beginning of August, it includes several categories and is a valid test for the championship of Spain and of the world in its speciality.

The whole environment of the beach is surrounded by a wide green space, with dune formations. The closing of the beach is on highland area and near to the sandbank, providing a wide sight of the bay that culminates with the image of the city of Santander to the other side, or the infinite extension of the sea on the horizon. It is for it that the zone turns this way into an ideal place for the leisure, the enjoyment of the coast and the picnic.

To its back, the cliff with form of flattened half moon and of 25 meters of height, contains it. In its wings, the line of coast enters in the sea as a cape, completing an special environment of singular beauty. To the left side the Tip of Langre protects the inlet, to the right the Rodico Tip delimits its end extension. The local physiognomy annotates Langre’s beach and leaks the surge partially, because the Cantabrian sea does not lose its wild nature; but it is transformed and reborn. So different waves exist in the area, preserving a zone of calm waters in its left side, under the protection of the cliff.

Mar Grande. Parte C

Big Sea. Part C

Icono Inglés. Icon English After the last series, we gathered again. This time we moved some distance offshore, where the waves were borning; to surf them in the beginning. The source of the waves is quite relative when the sea is savage and revolt. Therefore, due to the strong conditions, the swell is created in several areas and on a random basis or exactly rather difficult to predict. With this scenario is almost certainly that you be wasted forces, necessary to fully enjoy the surf and be aware of the respect that the sea imposes.

300 Meters from the shore, with the tide in its highest point, the sea was calmed down. The series of waves returned to their regularity. Had reduced its size up to two and a half meters, preserving some giant in the group. I take air to recover my effort. The line of the beach was small. In the promenade there were a group of people who were enjoying the show. This image appeared and disappeared with the course of the series. One hundred meters ahead, in the shore direction, the impressive waves were rising over the three and a half meters. We talked among ourselves about its size. An experienced surfer, placed in one end, explained the movements and behaviour in such a scenario. His hands described the optimal path and the best maneuvers. He concluded by saying that a big wave is not handled, it must be followed. The minutes passed between comments and laughter. In my mind, it was awakened curiosity of putting into practice what the man said. In the air was breathed a special atmosphere, the adrenaline drove the passion that the sea creates. That conversation knocked at the doors of a new path.

Half an hour later appeared a giant, with four meters, in the second wave of the series. The colleague, that was located in the end, stood up on the board; when the wave contacted him. He moved to the base and he turned with armony. I saw as his board was jumping over the water. He directed his course toward the top and got stabilized. He crossed in front of the group, at high speed. We shouted excited. The subsequent waves were of smaller size.

Three people were staying yet in the water. The time came to retire and enjoy what each one had experienced. I only thought about in the new giant that would come. The forces became scarcer and the idea to catch a great wave was fading. Another boy grabbed a wave of medium size and came with her to the shore. I returned the gaze toward the sea. A large volume of water, which had two meters height, appeared on the horizon. Its sound caused that the other surfer was turned to it. We increased the distance between us. When it reached me, it exceeded over three meters. The way to the base hit my chest with vertigo. I recalled the conversation and tried to make a quick and harmonius rotation. I went to the crest. The uncertainty and the emotion that I felt drew an smile. I corrected the trajectory and I got stability. The speed sounded between the surface of the water and the board. Near the shore, I dismounted from the wave.

The thoughts were filling with emotions, and them could not take shape. I was overflowed, I felt happy and satisfied. That was the end of the day that I termed as: «the day of big sea«.

Mar Grande. Parte B

Icono Español. Icon Spanish Las olas continuaban llegando, parecían no agotarse.

Big Sea. Part B

Icono Inglés. Icon English The waves were continuing coming, them seemed not to become exhausted. The arrival to the best zone again was becoming more complicated. The sea was pushing strongly towards the shore and with the joy of the waves nobody noticed the increase of the tide.

Waves of good size were beginning to appear in the distance. When them were coming to our position, them had overcome 3 meters, reaching four meters of height. Waiting for the suitable wave, we were chatting on the maneuvers with the noise of the surge as sonorous band. The sensations that the sea provokes were compensating the days of smooth sea in which each one had devoted himself to other occupations. The series were returning again. The wind was watering with torn water the surface of the sea. We resume the rotating shifts for the waves. The first one that went forward, got up on the board, was late to the wave and collapsed from the top. The speed of the water had increased.

A colleague placed to the left side managed to be raised to another wave. It came to the base and turned with rapidity. Near to the crest, he was crossing the water wall that was transporting him quickly. None maneuver was possible, only what the sea was allowing. He got lost in the distance, finishing his trip.

We sat on the boards, that were rocking by the movement of the surge. We placed transversely and continued speaking. A companion commented that the sea had hardened. Another boy behind me asked about the conversation. I turned to answer. There were unless four meters of distance between us and it was impossible to listen to nothing. A great mass of water was raised over us. In the middle of its height we submerge inside the wall of water to avoid the wave. In the other side, the level of the sea was descending abruptly. When we were in that low level, we turned to look towards the next colossus that would come. looking at the right, I observed as the eyes of another companion were going off towards the horizon. A deaf and metallic sound made me look at the front. A new wave came. Down, on the board; I saw it to raise hidding the sky. The sound was wrapping the whole space. A titan of water, which had more than three meters, was preparing to break. I dived again. In direction towards the depths, I felt the throb of the wave on the board, which had remained in the surface. My ankle was struck and I came back up to breath again.

Mar Grande. Parte A

A continuación cogimos posición y espacio.

Big Sea. Part A

Icono Inglés. Icon English The day dawned clouded. The Sun was showing shyly its light between the clouds and the horizon was drawn through a line with a color between gray and white. I consulted the predictions, then I prepared the equipment and went towards Somo. The two meters and a half that was in the forecasting made me accelerate the pace.

In the parking which is in the main entrance of the beach, there were few vehicles. The sound of the waves hitting the shore filled the atmosphere. On the beach just four people were concentrated in the same area. Now he saw waves of three meters that were moving with a firm step up to the damp sand. The wind was blowing energetically, striking against the neoprene causing a feeling of comfort. In contact with the face, it awaked me, for the second time. Looking at the sea a tingling ran through my body.

I got into the water by a comfortable track and I used the currents to reach out to open sea. The waves arrived periodically by pushing with force. Through the duck diving, I got closer to the right point. After defeating the last wave, I reached a quiet zone. Everyone were there. I approached them, I greeted and we began to talk animatedly. The day promised strong emotions. The caution and the emotion were intermingled while the waves were happening. I returned the gaze toward the shore, which was far from our position. Between it and us ,the waves were collecting big masses of water which eventually broke, tracing the path from one side to the other. This informed us that although there was much size there were good conditions. Even so, the impression that was causing the water through the roll, was amazed us.

A new series of waves appeared to the fund. A surfer, that was in the first line, went up into the first of the series. From right to left slipped on the wave. Was up and down, enjoying his travel. The ripple reached us. Up, we saw him run in front of the tube that was forming. His hand was rubbing the wall of water that was taking shape. A cry and some smiles. Then we took our position and each space. Came a wave of another partner. He was looking for speed and was lost in the distance. A big wave was walking to me. Its height of three meters drank the water from its bottom. The sound that was producing simulated in my head the most absolute silence. Turn my body. A shove shook my board. I was poked out to its top and I quickly went down to the bottom. The vertigo and adrenaline fired my concentration. Surfing near the wall of the wave, with the body flexed, I had balance. I returned to the base and I went toward the crest. The wave was breaking 20 meters ahead. I got ascended the wall, I jumped and I dove into the sea. The board subject to my ankle expected me in the surface.
